ROTACISMO

Ricardo Ruales has Treacher Collins syndrome, a congenital condition that affected the formation of his skull and his hearing. As a result of this syndrome, among other things, he has rhotacism (a difficulty pronouncing the “R”), and at the age of 24 he decided to attend speech therapy to address it. This documentary essay explores questions of invisibility, the delayed development of voice, and the complexity of self-construction shaped by disability and a dissident sexuality.
